Terrelle Pryor has been told that he will be allowed to compete for the starting quarterback place with the Oakland Raiders.
Carson Palmer spent much of the 2012 season as the Raiders' quarterback, with Pryor stepping in when the 33-year-old picked up an injury at the end of the season.
Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie told NFL Radio: "[Pryor] needs to see if he can take a game over in the pre-season, make some plays and carry out a game plan.
"Let him compete. That's what it's all about. If it looks like he can help us win, at the end of the day, that's what it's all about. That's what we want.
"It was good to see him go in and implement a game plan. He carried it out, played the game through and showed us what he can do. He definitely flashed some things that we're going to try and see what we can do with him in the off-season."
During his week 17 start, Pryor threw two touchdown passes in their loss to the San Diego Chargers.
The Raiders finished third in the AFC West, with four wins and 12 losses.
