Matthew Hudson-Smith: "It was improvisation"

Team GB's Matthew Hudson-Smith admits that tactics played no part in his performance in the semi-finals of the men's 400m.

Matthew Hudson-Smith has admitted that tactics played no part in his powerful come-from-behind performance in the semi-finals of the men's 400m this evening.

The 21-year-old was in sixth place heading into the final 100m stretch but dug deep to finish in second place by one hundredth of a second.

"That was crazy," Hudson-Smith told BBC Sport afterwards. "I messed up on the transition at the top end but I have no idea what just happened, I'm not going to lie to you!

"No, [it wasn't intentional]. It was improvisation. When I felt them all go past me, I was like 'okay, I have enough left, I have another gear', so I just started kicking.

"When I saw the time and that I'd made the finals, I was really happy because it wasn't the best of runs."

Hudson-Smith now joins the likes of Kirani James and Lashawn Merritt in the final race on Sunday night.
