Eoin Morgan: 'We wouldn't have appealed Stokes wicket'

Eoin Morgan says that Steven Smith should have withdrawn Australia's appeal that led to Ben Stokes's dismissal in the second one-day international at Lord's.

England one-day international captain Eoin Morgan has said that he thought Australia captain Steven Smith would have withdrawn the appeal that led to Ben Stokes's dismissal

Stokes was dismissed for stopping the ball with his hand when Mitchell Starc threw the ball at the wicket from 14 yards in an attempt to run him out.

"I'm not sure what to think of it to be honest. It would have been a lot different if we were fielding," Morgan told Sky Sports News.

"The guy throws the ball in your direction from five yards and all you can do is flinch. He was given out.

"It would have been a lot different if we were fielding - I think it was a natural reaction to protect himself as much as anything else."

The law regarding wickets taken by obstructing the field states that the movement to block the ball must be intentional.

Australia won the match by 64 runs.
