Preview: Liverpool Women vs. Leicester City Women - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Women's Super League clash between Liverpool Women and Leicester City Women, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Liverpool Women will get their Women's Super League campaign up and running when they play host to Leicester City Women on Sunday.

The Reds achieved an impressive fourth-placed finish last term, while the Foxes did enough to maintain their top-flight status.

Liverpool are set to kick off their third consecutive top-flight season, with the Reds looking to build upon an encouraging 2023-24 campaign.

Matt Beard's side won 12, drew five and lost five of their 22 matches to finish in fourth spot and above rivals Manchester United.

With the Reds looking to enjoy more success in 2024-25, they have delved into the transfer market to bolster their squad with the additions of Olivia Smith, Gemma Evans and Cornelia Kapocs.

Liverpool will hope that their new signings can help them pick up from where they left off last season after they finished the 2023-24 campaign with four consecutive victories.

Incidentally, the final one of those victories took place in a home clash against Leicester, with the Reds running out 4-0 winners thanks to a Leanne Kiernan hat-trick and a Sophie Roman Haug effort.

Meanwhile, Leicester are set to participate in their fourth consecutive WSL season after comfortably avoiding relegation last season.

The Foxes finished 12 points clear of basement side Bristol City despite having to settle for a 10th-placed finish.

Leicester will be hoping to operate away from the danger zone in their first season under the watch of Amandine Miquel, who is managing outside of France for the first time in her career.

Miquel has joined Leicester after spending seven years in charge of Reims - a team that she guided to the Championship playoffs in last season's French top-flight campaign.

The Foxes have strengthened their squad with the permanent additions of Ruby Mace, Asmita Ale, Chantelle Swaby, Shana Chossenotte, Sari Kees and Noemi Mouchon.

Leicester will hope that their new signings can help them clinch consecutive away wins over Liverpool after they clinched a 3-0 victory in March's away Women's FA Cup tie.

Team News

Liverpool Women's Sophie Roman Haug on September 15, 2024© Imago

Liverpool defender Grace Fisk is unavailable for selection after she sustained an ankle injury in training earlier this month.

Evans is expected to be handed her debut, and the former Man United defender is set to be joined in the back three by Jenna Clark and Gemma Bonner.

Kapocs is also set to make her first appearance for the club, with the striker likely to operate in a front-two pairing with Sophie Roman Haug.

Leicester have reported no fresh injury concerns, but Hannah Cain and Shannon O'Brien are still working their way back from their spell on the sidelines.

Janina Leitzig is set to start between the posts, and she could be shielded by the back four of Ale, Julie Thibaud, Swaby and CJ Bott.

Like Swaby, Mouchon is poised to make her WSL debut, with the forward set offer one of Leicester's main attacking threats.

Liverpool Women possible starting lineup:
Laws; Clark, Evans, Bonner; Parry, Hobinger, Holland, Nagano; Hinds; Haug, Kapocs

Leicester City Women possible starting lineup:
Leitzig; Ale, Thibaud, Swaby, Bott; Rantala, Mace, Takarada, Pelgander, Goodwin; Mouchon

We say: Liverpool Women 2-1 Leicester City Women

Leicester may have beaten Liverpool in the FA Cup last term, but the Reds managed to complete a league double in the 2023-24 campaign, and we think that they will draw confidence from those results to clinch a narrow victory in their WSL opener.
