Tom Daley: 'I can win gold medal'

Tom Daley believes that the unpredictability of diving means that he has a good chance of winning a gold medal at the Olympics.

Tom Daley has claimed that he is not ruling out the possibility of winning a gold medal at the Olympics.

Despite China's Qui Bo being heavy favourite for the 10 metre platform in London, Daley insists previous competitions prove that anything is possible in diving.

The 18-year-old said: "Normally in diving, silver is gold, because the Chinese dominate everything, but you never know what can happen in an Olympic Games.

"Take Athens in 2004 for example. The Greek team only qualified because they were the host country. China failed their dive in the last round, then one of the Russians hit the board, then the Americans messed their dive up and Greece won Olympic gold.

"You take off the board, land in the water and it's 1.6 seconds. You hit the water at 34 miles per hour and, in between that gap, anything can happen."

Daley begins his quest for a medal on Monday with partner Pete Waterfield in the synchronished 10 metre platform.
