Paulo Sousa confident of Basel improvement after Porto draw

Paulo Sousa insists that Basel are in a good position to reach the last eight after a 1-1 draw with Porto in the first leg of their Champions League tie.

Basel head coach Paulo Sousa has claimed that his side will produce an improved display in the second leg after a 1-1 draw with Porto in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Danilo's late penalty handed Porto a crucial away goal in a match they dominated for long spells, but Sousa is confident that Basel can do enough in Portugal to book their place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

"I watched the second half with pleasure because we like a challenge at Basel," the Portuguese coach told reporters. "We like difficulties and Porto created many for us.

"They are a team with great quality although, until the 26th minute, the game was balanced. They deserved the result, admittedly, and they could easily have got another goal but fortunately this draw gives us hope for the second leg.

"We'll have time to get some players back fit and I believe we will be able to do better than we did in the return leg."

Basel have not reached the last eight of Europe's elite club competition since 1974.
