FC Koln pile misery on winless Borussia Monchengladbach

Anthony Modeste scores the only goal as FC Koln earn a 1-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach, who slip to a fifth successive Bundesliga defeat.

Borussia Monchengladbach have slipped to a fifth successive Bundesliga defeat as Anthony Modeste handed FC Koln a 1-0 victory.

A disastrous start to the season continued for Lucien Favre, who watched his side miss the chance to move off the bottom of the table by earning their first points of the campaign.

The 3-0 defeat to Sevilla in midweek ensured that confidence was still low in the Gladbach camp, and the early signs were worrying as Leandro Bittencourt tested Yann Sommer with a fine effort from distance.

A sluggish start appeared to be put behind them when Favre's side started to move the ball in the same fashion which led them to a third-place finish, but chances were difficult to come by and they were given another warning when only a poor touch from Yuya Osako prevented him from shooting at goal just before the break.

Gladbach showed no signs of improving in the early stages of the second half, and they were fortunate to remain on level terms when Yann Sommer pushed away Osako's header.

However, their luck ran out as the hosts broke the deadlock when poor marking allowed Modeste to head home from Bittencourt's inch-perfect cross.

It was a surprisingly comfortable finish for the home side, who continued to dominate and almost added a second late on when Modeste's latest header forced Sommer into a fine save as Gladbach failed to end their dismal run.
