Claudio Ranieri: 'Win was better than my first Chelsea game'

Claudio Ranieri says that Leicester City's win over Sunderland was better than his first game in charge of Chelsea 15 years ago.

New Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri has insisted that the 4-2 win over Sunderland this afternoon was better than his first game in change of Chelsea.

The Italian saw his Foxes side claim all three points thanks to a Riyad Mahrez brace and goals from Jamie Vardy and Marc Albrighton.

"It was a very good start and I am very happy with my players in the first match, which is so important in front of our fans. They supported us. I told my players to be the warriors for them," Ranieri told BBC Sport.

The performance was outstanding from the beginning. I was calm because I saw my players concentrate. I remember my first match [as Chelsea boss] was against Manchester United and we were losing 2-0 and ended up drawing 3-3. This was better."

Ranieri spent four years in charge of the Stamford Bridge club between 2000 and 2004, before going on to manage Valencia, Juventus, Roma, Inter Milan and Greece, among others.
