Manchester United showed an interest in Lionel Messi after Barcelona's announcement on Thursday night, according to a report.

Manchester United reportedly showed an interest in Lionel Messi after Barcelona's announcement on Thursday night, but Paris Saint-Germain appear to be closing in on the Argentine's signature.

In news that shocked the world of football, Barcelona revealed that they would be unable to extend Messi's contract at Camp Nou, making the attacker a free agent this summer.

A number of clubs, including Manchester City and Chelsea, have since been linked with the 34-year-old, who was seemingly ready to sign a new five-year deal at Camp Nou.

According to The Telegraph, Man United showed 'some interest' in the South American after it was confirmed that he would be leaving the Catalan giants.

However, the report claims that PSG are the firm favourites for Messi, who could sign a two-year deal with the French giants over the weekend.

Messi's father and representative Jorge Messi is allegedly preparing to meet with the capital side on Saturday in the hope of agreeing a lucrative contract at Parc des Princes.
