Manchester United are allegedly finding it difficult to sign key duo Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo to new contracts at the club.

Manchester United are reportedly finding it difficult to sign Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo to new contracts at the club.

Garnacho is Man United's leading goalscorer this season, with the 20-year-old scoring eight goals and registering four assists in 28 appearances in all competitions, while 19-year-old Mainoo has made 16 outings during the 2024-25 campaign.

The former's contract is due to run until June 2028, while the latter has a deal until June 2027, with the option of a further 12 months, but the pair are among the lowest earners at Old Trafford.

According to the Daily Mail, there have been contract discussions with both players, but talks are currently at a standstill, with the 20-time English champions 'struggling to reach agreements' with the pair.

Mainoo is believed to be untouchable at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils not thought to be willing to sell the England international under any circumstances, but there has recently been speculation surrounding Garnacho's future.

Man United 'struggling to agree deals with Garnacho, Mainoo'

Garnacho has not started for Man United since being dropped from the squad for the Manchester derby in the middle of December.

Each of his last five appearances for the 20-time English champions have come off the bench, including Monday's 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Garnacho is pushing to return to the XI for Sunday's Premier League clash against Liverpool, but his best work comes as a wide player, and head coach Ruben Amorim is deploying a 3-4-3 system with two narrow number 10s.

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are believed to be among the clubs monitoring his situation, with Man United thought to be willing to let the Argentina international leave Old Trafford if a suitable offer arrives.

Could Mainoo leave Old Trafford?

There has been some criticism of Mainoo's form this season, with the Englishman finding it difficult to match his performance level from last term, and he dropped to the bench for the clash with Newcastle.

There was an immediate improvement when the teenager was introduced in the first half against the Magpies, though, with Amorim's team having more control and looking a more solid outfit when he was in the middle of the park.

As a result, it would be a shock to see him on the bench for the clash with Liverpool, while a departure is highly unlikely, with the academy product viewed as a vital player both now and in the future.

There is no immediate panic when it comes to the contract situations of either player, but the fact that discussions are not progressing in a positive manner is certainly concerning during a very difficult period in the club's history.
