Newcastle United to rival Everton for James McCarthy?

Newcastle United will reportedly rival Everton for the signature of Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy.

Newcastle United are reportedly ready to rival Everton for the signature of James McCarthy.

The Wigan Athletic midfielder has been linked with several clubs since their relegation from the Premier League last season, and it is believed that manager Roberto Martinez is keen for the midfielder to join him at Everton.

According to The Express, though, Newcastle are also interested after fears that they could lose Yohan Cabaye to Paris Saint-Germain or Manchester United.

Wigan are said to want around £20m for McCarthy, although both Newcastle and Everton believe that a much lower fee is likely.

Latics boss Owen Coyle admitted this week that he would not stand in the 22-year-old's way if he wanted to move to a bigger club.

Meanwhile, the Magpies are expected to complete the signing of Bafetimbi Gomis this week after agreeing a fee with Lyon.
