Preview: Wolfsburg vs. Eintracht Frankfurt - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Bundesliga clash between Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, including team news and predicted lineups.

Wolfsburg will be looking to strengthen their grip on sixth position in the Bundesliga table when they welcome Eintracht Frankfurt to the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Oliver Glasner's side are currently in charge of the final Europa League spot in Germany's top flight, while Frankfurt occupy 14th position, just two points above the bottom three.

Wolfsburg will enter the match full of confidence, having recorded an extremely impressive 4-1 victory away to Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night. The hosts entered the match off the back of a fine run of form but could not prevent Die Wolfe from collecting all three points in fine fashion.

Glasner's side also beat Augsburg 2-1 on their travels on May 16, but they did suffer a 2-0 home defeat to title challengers Borussia Dortmund last weekend.

As it stands, three points separate sixth-placed Wolfsburg from Hoffenheim in seventh, while Freiburg and Schalke 04 are also in the mix for the final Europa League position.

The hosts will fancy their chances of triumphing on Saturday as they recorded a 2-0 victory in the reverse game earlier this season, while Frankfurt have won just one of their last seven Bundesliga meetings.

Frankfurt have finished eighth and seventh in their last two Bundesliga seasons but are facing a battle to secure their top-flight status for the 2020-21 season.

Indeed, Adi Hutter's side are currently 14th in the table, just two points clear of 16th-placed Fortuna Dusseldorf and seven ahead of 17th-placed Werder Bremen, whom they will tackle on Wednesday night.

Frankfurt have not actually been victorious in the Bundesliga since the start of February, losing five of their last six in Germany's top flight to slide down the table during a tough run of form, but the Eagles came from 3-1 behind to pick up a point at home to Freiburg on Tuesday night.

As mentioned, Die Adler have a six-pointer away to Bremen next week, while they will host Mainz on June 6, which are likely to be two huge fixtures in their fight to avoid the drop.

Team News

Wolfsburg's injury list is fairly substantial at the moment with the likes of Paulo Otavio, William, Ignacio Camacho, Joshua Guilavogui, Mamoudou Karamoko and Yannick Gerhardt all on the sidelines.

Felix Klaus is still suspended, meanwhile, meaning that the Wolves will once again be without a number of first-team players for this weekend's contest.

Glasner's team did not pick up any fresh concerns against Leverkusen, though, and it would not be a surprise to see the same starting XI sent onto the field due to their impressive performance.

As for Frankfurt, David Abraham, Goncalo Paciencia and Marco Russ are all still injured, but Hutter otherwise has a fully-fit squad heading into the contest.

Timothy Chandler scored off the bench against Freiburg on Tuesday and is in contention to start, while Jonathan de Guzman could also earn a spot in the middle of the park.

There are unlikely to be changes in the final third, though, with Bas Dost again expected to join Andre Silva.

Wolfsburg possible starting lineup:
Casteels; Mbabu, Pongracic, Brooks, Roussillon; Steffen, Schlager, Arnold, Joao Victor; Brekalo, Weghorst

Frankfurt possible starting lineup:
Trapp; Hinteregger, Hasebe, Ilsanker; Kostic, Rode, Torro, Kamada, Toure; Dost, Andre Silva

We say: Wolfsburg 2-1 Frankfurt

There is no question that Frankfurt are capable of picking up a positive result this weekend despite their struggles this season. Wolfsburg were terrific against Leverkusen last time out, though, and we are finding it difficult to back anything other than a home victory, albeit by a narrow margin.
