Former All Black Jeff Wilson has claimed that he 'doesn't understand' the decision to axe James Horwill from Australia's Rugby World Cup squad.
The 30-year-old lock was left out of the 31-man party by coach Michael Cheika on Friday.
Ex-Wallabies captain Horwill has won 58 caps for his country since 2007.
"Steve Hansen talks about being brave in selections and Michael Cheika has done that," Wilson told Fox Sports. "He's made some very big calls and not picking James Horwill is a big surprise to me.
"I thought he'd had his best international campaign in a long, long time. He was very good against the Springboks and the All Blacks in Sydney. The games are going to be tight at the World Cup and he has so much experience. I don't understand it but that's not to say I'm right."
Australia start their Rugby World Cup campaign on September 23 when they face Fiji in Cardiff.
