Live Commentary: Olympic swimming - day four as it happened

Sports Mole brings you live coverage from day four of the Olympic swimming.

Good morning and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage of day four of the Olympic swimming.

There are four events taking place this morning - men's 100m freestyle, women's 200m butterfly, men's 200m breaststroke, and men's 4x200 relay.

Four medals are up for grabs this evening, and Team GB will compete on at least two fronts. Caitlin McClatchey is swimming in the women's 200m freestyle final, while Hannah Miley goes for gold in the 200m individual medley.

Meanwhile, Michael Phelps is seeking to add to his haul of 14 gold medals tonight when he competes in the men's 200m butterfly final.

Please note that the heats get under way at 10am.

21.24That's all from us today. We'll be back from 9.30am tomorrow to bring you all of the action from the Aquatics Centre. Do join us then!

21.22We've witnessed Olympic history here tonight. Michael Phelps, the we salute you! 19 medals in total is just phenomenal!

21.04He does it! France come in second, and China are third. Britain finish in a admirable sixth.

21.03This will be his 15th gold when he secures this!

21.02Phelps is about to become the greatest Olympian of all time by sealing victory for the US in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay.

20.52Alicia Coutts takes silver for Australia, and Caitlin Leverenz of the US takes home the bronze. A seventh place finish for Miley, but she can proud of her performance here tonight.

20.50But it's Ye who steals the gold with a powerful freestyle finish!

20.48Steph Rice of Australia leads at the halfway point, going into the backstroke length now. Miley is off the pace.

20.42All eyes on Hannah Miley now. She's going for gold in the women's 200m individual medley, but does she stand a chance against China's new sensation Yi Shewen?

20.32Willis is equally superb! He comes in second behind Gyurta of Hungary, and isn't far off Jamieson's English record! These two could be the future of British swimming!

20.27It's Willis's turn now. It would be fantastic to have both of these guys in the last eight!

20.26Jamieson finishes first and as good as confirms his place in the last eight. I'd days he's a gold medal hope with that dominant performance. And it was another British record to boot!

20.25He leads with one length to go, and looks like he's got something in reserve!

20.24Jamieson is looking really good for the final here!

20.18It's the final of the men's 200m breaststroke up next, and we have two swimmers in this. Michael Jamieson and Andrew Willis both exceeded expectation in the heats, so it would be great to see at least one of them in the final!

20.08She comes in fifth with a time of just over two minutes. That's good enough for an overall eighth and a place in the final!

20.06Jemma Lowe is up now in the women's 200m butterfly semi-final. You can do it, Jemma!

20.00Sensational stuff in the men's 200m butterfly! Chad le Clos beat Phelps to the gold, leaving the American with silver. Japan's Takeshi Matsuda picked up bronze.

19.51The first gold medal of the evening goes to Allison Schmitt of the US in the women's 200m freestyle. Camille Muffat of France grabs silver, and Bronte Barratt of Australia takes bronze. Caitlin Mcclatchey of Team GB comes seventh, but seventh in the world, there's no shame in that!

19.38That was a slower heat, won by Nathan Adrian of the US.

19.35Second heat is about to commence, Angel and Cullen Jones of the US are the ones to watch here.

19.33Magnussen lives up to that reputation by winning the first heat, Cielo is second and Lobintsev of Russia is third.

19.31Magnussen is considered one of the fastest men in water, while Cielo holds the world record!

19.29We have Cesar Cielo of Brazil, James Magnussen of Australia, and Yannick Agnel of France to name but a few.

19.28First up, it's the men's 100m freestyle. While there's no home interest here, there are some big names about to take to the pool.

19.23A strong US team that includes the likes of Phelps and Lochte is the big favourite in the latter event, though. Whatever the outcome, we're in for a spectacle.

19.20Looking further ahead, our firm medal hope Hannah Miley is up in the women's 200m individual medley final, and our men's relay team is going for gold in the 4x200 freestyle.

19.09Closer to home, Team GB's Jemma Lowe is hoping to book a spot in the women's 2oom butterfly final, and Michael Jamieson and Andrew Willis are both in action in the 200m breaststroke semi-finals. They were superb in the heats. Read all about it here.

19.07Legendary Olympian Michael Phelps is also in action tonight in the men's 200m butterfly. His rivalry with US teammate Tyler Clary adds since to that event.

19.05Caitlin Mcclatchey will be the first Brit to take to the pool this evening, in the women's 200m freestyle final. She was very impressive during the semi-finals, so a medal certainly isn't beyond her!

19.01Welcome back to Sports Mole's live updates from day four of the Olympic swimming. We have an exciting evening ahead of us with Team GB competing on several fronts.

11.30That's all from us this morning. We'll be back to round up the action from the finals and semi-finals from 7:00pm tonight. Do join us then!

11.25Team GB qualify for the final of the men's 4x200 freestyle relay in fifth place overall.

11.21Well done Britain! Renwick secures third! The US win it by a landslide with a finish time of 7:06.75, followed by the Aussies.

11.20Britain are holding on in third here, led by Robbie Renwick. We need a big finish to edge out Russia though!

11.15A tough heat for Britain coming up. We have the US, Australia and China in this one!

11.11France win the first heat, followed by Germany, with South Africa in third.

11.10Team GB are up in the second heat of the men's 4x200m freestyle relay shortly. France lead the first heat at present.

11.00So both Jamieson and Willis are into the semi-finals!

10.59Absolutely brilliant from Willis! He comes in first and equals his English record, condemning Kitajima to second place. He's just beaten one of the legends of the sport!

10.58Willis is taking the race to Kitajima here. Let's hope he has the energy to sustain this!

10.56Another Team GB hopeful will swim in the next heat in the shape of Andrew Willis, and he's up against the ever impressive Kosuke Kitajima of Japan!

10.55A slower heat there, won by Ryo Tateishi of Japan on 2:09.37.

10.51It's a new British record for Jamieson! He puts in a strong and steady swim to finish just behind world champion Daniel Gyurta of Hungary. That's the first British record we've seen in the pool so far!

10.49The men's 200m breaststroke is under way, and Michael Jamieson of Team GB is looking good in the first of the seeded heats.

10.38Well done, Jemma. We have a Brit in the semi-finals. It's bad news for Gandy, though. She narrowly misses the last 16

10.37Lowe opts for a different tactic, turning third at the halfway point and conserving energy for the final stretch. She takes third!

10.35We have a Briton in the final heat too. Take a bow Jemma Lowe.

10.34She ran out of steam in the final stretch there, and may not make the semis with a time of 2:11.10.

10.32Gandy has led the pack from the off. Powerful turns have helped her maintain her lead, but Jiao of China is on her heels.

10.31Ellen Gandy is up for Great Britain in the women's 200m butterfly. Great reception for her!

10.18The hotly-tipped James Magnussen comes in second in a relatively slow heat there. Verschuren of the Netherlands wins it with a time of 48.37.

10.16Pieter Timmers of Belgium wins the next heat. James Roberts of Australia does well to shake off a sluggish start and finish joint-third.

10.14Cielo is fifth, Brown comes seventh.

10.14Nathan Adrian of the US with a blistering sprint to power through in first place with a time of 48.19s. A dead cert for the semis.

10.13Brown is up against world record-holder Cesar Cielo of Brazil. Good luck to him!

10.11Heat five goes to Norbert Trandafir of Romania. Adam Brown is up next.

10.09Kemal Arda Gurdal of Turkey touches the side first, narrowly ahead of Latvian Uvis Kalnins. His time of 49.71 may not be enough for the semi-finals, though.

10.08George Richard Bovell of Trinidad drops out of heat four. We're not sure why yet.

10.05And Sidni Hoxha wins the third heat. Another lifetime best there, finishing in 51.11. That was the quickest heat so far!

10.05Esau Simpson of Grenada wins the second heat, putting in a hard graft for a personal best time of 53.26s.

10.03Mamadou Soumare of Mali records a deserved win in the first heat after leading from the off.

10.00The swimmers hit the pool!

9.59According to the Olympics website, Beni Bertrand Binobagira qualified for this heat with a time of 3:39.00. That HAS to be an error!

9.58The first of eight heats is about to commence. As usual, the first is unseeded.

9.53I'm sure you'll all join me in wishing him the very best of luck. He'll need it with the likes of Yannick Agnel of France and Australia's James Magnussen to contend with.

9.49Adam Brown, a 23-year-old swimmer hailing from Cambridge, is Team GB's hopeful in this event.

9.43Good morning, and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage of day four of the Olympic swimming. We'll be under way in around 15 minutes, starting with the men's 100m freestyle.
