The Team GB hopeful finished second in her semi-final with a finish time of 2:10.89, a fraction of a second behind Hungary's Katinka Hosszu.
Chinese favourite Shiwen Ye set a new Olympic record with her time of 2:08.39 during the second heat, in which five swimmers were quick enough to qualify.
Miley went through to tomorrow evening's final as the seventh-fastest qualifier ahead of slowest qualifier, Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe.
