Federer broke early in the opening set to go 3-1 up and then kept the pressure on Gasquet on his way to closing it out 6-4 in routine fashion.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion was at his ruthless best in the second, running his opponent ragged across the court before sealing it 6-2 inside 26 minutes to take a firm grip on the tie.

Gasquet put up more resistance in the third, saving four break points early on, though he still failed to conjure up any break points of his own on the Federer serve.

The Swiss then turned on the style to confirm his the Swiss success, breaking twice to secure a 6-4 6-2 6-2 victory with just under two hours on the clock.

The triumph is the first that Switzerland have achieved in the history of the competition.
