Halep gained emphatic revenge against the player who ended her title defence last summer, allowing Amanda Anisimova just one game, while Nadal defeated Stefano Travaglia and Thiem saw off Casper Ruud.
It was a good day for the last two French singles hopes, with wild card Hugo Gaston stunning Stan Wawrinka and Caroline Garcia upsetting Elise Mertens.

Ashleigh Barty chose not to defend her French Open title, instead staying at home in Australia. She does not appear to be missing Roland Garros too much, spending her Friday night, beer in hand, at the AFL Finals cheering on Richmond.
