Ferrer pushed hard to bring up a break point while Murray was serving for the set, but the British number one got the better of his opponent in a long rally to save it, before wrapping up the game.

Murray was off to a quick start again in the second, winning the first three games to take a double break.

However, Ferrer dug deep to get a break back before winning four games in a row, getting the second back on serve to give himself a chance in the match.

At 5-5, Murray managed to capitalise on a couple of mistakes from his opponent to get a break back on the board, before saving three break points against his serve to see out the match in the next game.

Murray will face the winner of the match between Tommy Robredo and Jeremy Chardy tomorrow.
