Federer broke French Open champion Wawrinka in the third game to move 2-1 ahead, and it proved enough daylight to see out the first set.

Little could separate the pair in the opening six games of the second set as both sat tied on 3-3, but another break by the 17-time Grand Slam winner helped him move 4-3 ahead en route to a commanding two-set lead.

The world number two continued to dominate the court in the third and made the vital break in the fourth game of the set when Wawrinka sent his forehand beyond the baseline.

Federer secured the crucial hold to edge closer to the final, and he moved even nearer when he notched another break of his compatriot courtesy of a sliced backhand into the net by the fifth seed. The 34-year-old served out for the win to reach his seventh US Open final.

The world number two will be bidding to win the competition for the sixth time of his career and the first time since 2008.
