The two players had met each other once before, when Djokovic defeated the 28-year-old in straight sets at Monte Carlo in May.
However, both players showed good form in their service games as the match was tied at 4-4 before Djokovic earned a crucial hold to a take a 5-4 lead. The Serb then displayed his quality by breaking the Austrian with an impressive forehand winner to take the first set.
The world number one was even more impressive in the second, breaking twice to assert complete control over his opponent before keeping his composure to see out the set.
Djokovic found his rhythm once again in the third set as he dominated from the baseline to earn a break in the third game. He managed to break through the Austrian's defences once again to take a 5-2 lead, which then allowed him to serve out for the match.
The Serb will face Andreas Seppi in the third round of the competition.
