Sochi organisers: 'Three billion watched the opening ceremony'

The organisers of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony say that three billion people watched the event.

Three billion people watched the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics yesterday, according to the organisers of the event.

Twelve thousand members of staff were involved in the three-hour opening ceremony, which 40,000 people watched inside the Fisht Stadium.

However, the show did not all go according to plan, as one of the Olympic rings failed to perform.

One billion people watched the opening ceremony of the previous Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
