Oakland Raiders hire Jack Del Rio as head coach

The Oakland Raiders announce that they have hired Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio as their new head coach.

The Oakland Raiders have confirmed that they have hired Jack Del Rio to become their new head coach.

The Raiders fired Dennis Allen after week four of the season after posting an 8-28 record in his 36 matches with the club since 2012, and was replaced until the end of the campaign by Tony Sparano.

Despite finishing the season with a 3-13 record, the Raiders decided against hiring Sparano to the full-time position and opted for Del Rio, who has spent three seasons as defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos.

"After a thorough interview and evaluation process, we are excited to announce Jack Del Rio as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders," owner Mark Davis told the club's official website.

"I have no doubt that he will make a significant impact and help reach the goal of everyone in this building, which is to win championships."

"Jack Del Rio brings a strong leadership presence to this organisation," general manager Reggie McKenzie added. "He has developed an excellent reputation as a coach in this league and we are happy that he is a Raider."

Del Rio spent nine seasons as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, whom he guided to the post-season on two occasions.
