Joe Fitzpatrick surprised by "sluggish" feeling in final

Northern Ireland's Joe Fitzpatrick admits that he felt "sluggish" as he suffered defeat to Charlie Flynn in the lightweight final at the Commonwealth Games.

Joe Fitzpatrick has admitted to feeling "sluggish" after he failed to claim gold in the lightweight final at the Commonwealth Games.

Northern Ireland's fighter was comfortably beaten by Charlie Flynn of Scotland on Saturday afternoon, and he conceded that the schedule did have an impact on his performance.

"I don't know why, but I was a bit sluggish," Fitzpatrick told BBC Sport. "Five fights in a row is hard. I had a tough fight last night and didn't get a good sleep.

"Charlie was brilliant tonight. I was just drained, I don't know what was wrong."

Flynn's success was followed by another Scottish gold for Josh Taylor, who triumphed in the light welterweight final.
