Scotland's Charlie Flynn claims lightweight gold in win over Joe Fitzpatrick

Charlie Flynn secures gold for Scotland as the 20-year-old beats Northern Ireland's Joe Fitzpatrick in the lightweight final.

Scotland's Charlie Flynn produced a dominant display against Joe Fitzpatrick of Northern Ireland to win gold in the lightweight final at the Commonwealth Games.

Flynn was tactically superior in the opening three minutes of the bout, causing problems for his taller opponent by taking away the advantage of Fitzpatrick's longer reach.

Fitzpatrick forced himself onto the front foot after losing the first round, but he struggled to unleash many clean punches as Flynn displayed a strong defence to convince the judges to side with him once again.

Realising that he was behind on the scorecards, Fitzpatrick attempted to produce a big finish to the bout as he looked for the stoppage he needed for victory.

However, Flynn held his nerve impressively in the final round to frustrate his rival, and the announcement soon confirmed the success for the 20-year-old.
