Glenn Maxwell bashed a 38-ball 90 as Kings XI Punjab scored the most runs in a single innings of this year's IPL and beat table-toppers Chennai Super Kings by 44 runs.

Chennai won the toss and chose to bowl, a decision they would have thought was right when Punjab got off to an indifferent start.

That all changed when Maxwell entered in the fifth over and thumped 14 boundaries, eight of which were sixes, on his way to 90 before he was caught by Ravindra Jadeja off the bowling of Mohit Sharma.

David Miller (47) and George Bailey (40 not out off just 13 balls) helped Kings XI to mighty total that Chennai couldn't get anywhere near.

Sandeep Sharma took the key wicket of Dwayne Smith (4) in the first over and although the next five batsmen all got into double figures at better than a run a ball, Punjab's total was never threatened.

Faf du Plessis led the Super Kings with 52 off 25 balls.

Punjab now replace Chennai at the top of the IPL standings with six wins and one loss from their seven games.
