Sixers edge Thunder in Sydney Big Bash clash

Defending Big Bash champions the Sydney Sixers begin the new league by defeating city rivals Sydney Thunder by seven wickets.

The Sydney Sixers have begun their defence of the Big Bash league with a seven-wicket victory over city rivals the Sydney Thunder at the SCG.

The Thunder reached 143-5 from their 20 overs, with Ryan Carters top-scoring on 33 not out.

Luke Feldman was the pick of the Sixers' bowlers, taking two wickets and affording just 19 runs from his four overs.

Sixers opener David Warner faced just two balls before he was caught by Carters off the bowling of Chris Tremain.

It was an early setback for the Sixers but they moved past it with Brad Haddin surpassing 50 before he was clean bowled by Sean Abbott when going for the big shot with the scores level on 143.

Moises Henriques sealed the win on the next ball by driving Abbott through mid-off for four.
