Lizzie Armitstead confident of beating Australians in Commonwealth road race

Lizzie Armitstead is confident that the England team have enough quality to help her to victory over any Australian rival in Sunday's road race at the Commonwealth Games.

Lizzie Armitstead has backed Team England to prove their quality to the Australian riders ahead of Sunday's road race at the Commonwealth Games.

The 25-year-old will be supported in her bid for the gold medal by a strong squad, including Emma Pooley, and she is confident of upsetting her close rivals.

"I like the Aussies' confidence in saying they have the best team, but I'm not sure it's well-founded confidence - they have a very strong team but I think our team is equally strong," Armitstead told Team England's official website.

"There's a fair few golds in our team - we have Olympic champions and Emma Pooley has a massive pedigree, so I have massive confidence in our team.

"The most pressure I'm putting on myself is from me - I've got so many silvers, and I just want to be able to say I'm the champion of something rather than the silver medallist."

Armitstead was second behind Australia's Rochelle Gilmore in Delhi four years ago.
