Mark Cavendish will undergo surgery on his shoulder and has been ruled out for six weeks, meaning that he will miss the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The 29-year-old, who would have represented the Isle of Man, crashed out of the Tour de France at the end of the opening stage in Harrogate on Saturday.
His team, Omega Pharma-Quick Step, confirmed that he will have surgery this Wednesday after rupturing all ligaments around his acromioclavicular joint and a separated shoulder.
Cavendish has 25 Tour de France stage wins in his career and withdrew for the first time in six years.
