England's Jack Laugher wins his third consecutive gold medal in the 1m springboard diving competition at the Commonwealth Games.

England's Jack Laugher won his third consecutive 1m springboard diving gold medal at the Commonwealth Games with a dominant showing in Birmingham.

The 2014 and 2018 champion initially struggled to show his best form in the final and found himself down in third position at the halfway point.

However, Laugher soon rediscovered his groove and guaranteed himself the gold medal with a stunning 3.5 piked forward somersault on his final dive, which finally saw him break the 80-point barrier.

The 27-year-old ended with a total of 447.05 points to storm to the title ahead of silver medallist Shixin Li of Australia, who was a full 10 points behind the home favourite.

Laugher's compatriot and Commonwealth Games debutant Jordan Houlden threatened a major shock at the start of the competition and led the pack after his first three dives, scoring 81.60 for his opener - an inward 2.5 somersault piked.

Houlden could not maintain his grip on the gold medal during the second half of the contest but nevertheless ended in a very respectable third place with 429.30 points on the board.

Scotland's James Philip Heatly ended up in fourth with 401.00 points, and his countrymen Danny Mabbott and Ross Beattie placed ninth and 10th respectively.
