Aberdeen beat Inverness Caledonian Thistle to Scottish League Cup on penalties

Aberdeen beat Inverness Caledonian Thistle 4-2 on penalties to win the Scottish League Cup at Celtic Park.

Aberdeen have won their fifth Scottish League Cup crown, 19 years after their last triumph, edging out Inverness Caledonian Thistle in a penalty shootout after a goalless 120 minutes at Celtic Park.

Early on, Aberdeen lost an emotional Jonny Hayes to injury after the former Inverness man damaged his shoulder.

The Dons were on top though and almost opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour when Cameron Smith headed Andrew Considine's cross over.

They then came within inches of opening the scoring when Russell Anderson's shot struck the inside of the post and bobbled along the goalline before Caley managed to clear.

Aberdeen wanted a penalty when Josh Meekings appeared to trip Adam Rooney, but referee Steven McLean shook his head.

Just before half time, Aberdeen's pressure almost paid off in odd fashion when Mark Reynolds's intended cross bounced off the woodwork.

The second half was an affair of few chances, with Aberdeen midfielder Barry Robson testing Caley Thistle keeper Dean Brill from 30 yards with 10 minutes left.

In the dying moments of 90 minutes Caley thought that they should have had a penalty when Richie Foran seemed to be tugged back by Considine, but again McLean wasn't interested.

Meekings then ensured that extra time was needed by making an excellent last-ditch challenge on Niall McGinn just before full time.

In the extra 30 minutes, chances were hard to come by and soon a penalty shootout was needed to settle the two Scottish Premiership sides.

It started horribly for Caley, who have never won a major trophy, as Billy McKay and then Greg Tansey failed to score, with Aberdeen scoring their first four penalties to win the cup.

Rooney would smash the winning spot kick home to send the majority of Celtic Park into raptures.
