Gerardo Martino resigns as Argentina boss

Gerardo Martino stands down from his position as head coach of the Argentina national team.

Gerardo Martino has stood down as head coach of the Argentine national team.

The former Barcelona boss took charge of Argentina following the 2014 World Cup and has decided to resign from his position less than one month before the start of the Olympic Games.

Martino had initially been expected to remain with the South American nation despite a second Copa America final defeat to Chile in June, but a change of heart has seen the 53-year-old stand down.

It is understood that the retirement of Lionel Messi from international football played a part in Martino's decision, in addition to issues over squad selection for the Olympics in Rio.

Martino leaves Argentina with a record of 19 victories, seven draws and three defeats from 29 matches.
