Former Arsenal captain Sol Campbell believes that the Gunners' recent upturn in form is largely down to their 'guts'.

Thomas Vermaelen's last-minute winner in the 2-1 win over Newcastle United on Monday night capped a fourth straight Premier League game in which Arsenal have conceded first and came back to win.

Consequently Arsene Wenger's side have closed the gap on north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur to just one point, from a previous 10.

"The lads have shown a lot of spirit. You have to get a bit of the rub of the green, but that tends to come when you start being bolder on the pitch," Campbell told Arsenal Player.

"The more you bust a gut to win, the more you are going to see the crowd feed off that.

"You make your own luck, and against Newcastle there was a little deflection for the winning goal and the ball came to Vermaelen, but he was there because he busted a gut to get into the box."

Campbell was a member of the 'invincible' Arsenal squad that won the Premier League in 2003-04 without losing a single game.
