Nwankwo Kanu unconvinced by Arsenal's Mikel Arteta appointment

Nwankwo Kanu calls on Arsenal to appoint a "strong hand" amid speculation that Manchester City assistant Mikel Arteta is close to taking over.

Former Arsenal striker Nwankwo Kanu has suggested that Mikel Arteta is not the right man to take over at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta is expected to be announced as the permanent successor to Unai Emery in the next 24 hours, ending the Gunners' three-week search for a new boss.

Kanu is not convinced that rookie coach Arteta can reverse Arsenal's poor form, however, instead calling for a "strong hand" to be appointed.

"I know every fan is disappointed with the games the club have been playing of late," Kanu, who played for Arsenal between 1999 and 2004, told the News Agency of Nigeria.

"This is not the same Arsenal people used to know. But, all the same, we can still turn it around.

"It is clear that Arsenal are not where they are supposed to be, they have to change a lot of things and ensure that they return to the basics.

"We need a strong hand to bring back the glorious days of Arsenal."

Arteta has spent his three-and-a-half-year coaching career working as assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Arsenal are 10th in the Premier League after 17 matches, seven points adrift of the top four.
