Arsene Wenger says that Jack Wilshere "contributed very well" against West Ham United on his first top-flight start for Arsenal in 19 months.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hailed Jack Wilshere for his "very positive performance" in the stalemate with West Ham United on Wednesday evening.

The 25-year-old came in for a first Premier League start of the campaign - and just a sixth top-flight appearance overall - as the Gunners were held to a goalless draw at the London Stadium.

Despite the frustrating nature of Arsenal's overall display, Wenger was pleased to see Wilshere look sharp in midfield as the Englishman ended the match with a 91.8% passing-accuracy rate.

"Overall it was a positive performance," he told BT Sport. "Especially in first half. He showed good acceleration, he got fouled a few times and contributed very well.

"He also defended well, which is very important in this position. For a first game, it's a very positive performance."

Wilshere last started a league game for Arsenal 19 months ago, having spent last season on loan at Bournemouth.
