Arsenal reportedly table an opening offer of £40m for Wilfried Zaha, despite Crystal Palace demanding £80m for the Ivory Coast international.

Arsenal have reportedly made an opening bid of £40m for Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha.

The 26-year-old has emerged as Arsenal's top transfer target this summer, with the Gunners in the market for attacking reinforcements and Zaha desperate to join Unai Emery's side.

Talks over a transfer fee have proved to be a major stumbling block so far, though, with Palace understood to want at least £80m for the Ivory Coast international - almost double Arsenal's £45m budget.

The Eagles have no pressing need to cash in on their star asset, having already sold Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United for £50m and are therefore refusing to budge on their asking price.

Despite that, Sky Sports News reports that Arsenal have tried their luck with an opening gambit of £40m - half of what Palace are holding out for.

Roy Hodgson's side are expected to give short shrift to the offer, particularly given that they will owe 25% of whatever they earn to Man Utd as part of a sell-on clause in his contract.

Zaha, who supported Arsenal as a child, has scored 35 goals in 180 appearances during his second spell at Selhurst Park.
