Toby Alderweireld "focused" on Southampton in midst of transfer speculation

Toby Alderweireld admits that he is still not sure where his future lies beyond this season, but he insists that his focus at this moment in time is solely on Southampton.

Toby Alderweireld has reiterated that he is fully focused on helping Southampton to achieve their European goals this season, despite question marks still hanging over his future.

The 26-year-old has impressed during his loan spell on the South Coast with the Saints, and has previously hinted that he would like to remain in England beyond the end of the current campaign.

Those plans appeared to have been scuppered when Jose Luis Perez Caminero, the sporting director of Alderweireld's parent club Atletico Madrid, revealed that the La Liga champions intend to involve the Belgian in their next campaign.

However, Alderweireld has now had his say on the matter, telling Press Association Sport: "I saw something in the Spanish papers. I don't know, I didn't hear from them. We will see.

"It is not [frustrating] because it does not matter what they say, what is in the papers. I am just focused on Southampton and we are playing for a European spot, so it is going to be a special season. I am focused, I am happy here, so, yeah, no problem for me."

Southampton are currently fifth in the Premier League table, five points off Manchester City in the final Champions League qualification berth.
