Gerardo Martino: 'Departing Barcelona was not a surprise'

Gerardo Martino acknowledges that his failure to land a major trophy with Barcelona last season ultimately led to his departure.

Gerardo Martino has acknowledged that his failure to land a major trophy with Barcelona last season ultimately led to him leaving the Spanish club.

Martino replaced Tito Vilanova at the helm last summer, but lasted just one season as Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid won the league and Copa del Rey respectively.

"The difference between the big clubs, like Barca, and the smaller ones is that the former must always win and the other will usually win from time to time," Martino told Sport.

"At Barca you always have to win. This is a unique generation of players and they still want to win, because they never get tired of it.

"Barca's place in the football world will be maintained if these players are still playing well and winning."

Martino is currently unemployed.
