Gerardo Martino announces Barcelona departure

Barcelona boss Gerardo Martino announces his departure from the Catalan club following their failure to win the La Liga title on the final day of the season.

Barcelona boss Gerardo Martino has announced that he is leaving the club following their failure to win the La Liga title.

The 51-year-old replaced Tito Vilanova last summer, but he was not able to guide his side to the crown as they narrowly missed out on the final day as the Catalan club drew 1-1 with Atletico Madrid, who claimed the title by three points.

Barcelona were also knocked out of the Champions League by Diego Simeone's side at the quarter-final stage and were defeated in the final of the Copa del Rey by Real Madrid.

A statement on the club's Twitter page said: "Tata Martino announces he will leave FC Barcelona. The agreement between the manager and club is mutual."

Martino lost eight of his 58 games of charge of the Catalan club.
