Barnsley 2-0 Portsmouth

John O'Brien and Matty Done score the goals as Barnsley overcome ten-man Portsmouth.

Barnsley left it late to secure a 2-0 win over ten-man Portsmouth on Saturday afternoon.

The home side might have taken the lead after just six minutes when Craig Davies struck a powerful effort from distance, but Stephen Henderson pushed the ball to safety.

Barnsley again went close after 17 minutes when Jimmy McNulty whipped a dangerous ball into the box, but George Thorne cleared the danger as the home side increased the pressure.

Andy Gray was next to go close for Barnsley but his header struck the post, before Portsmouth's Jason Pearce headed an Erik Huseklepp cross harmlessly over the bar.

Portsmouth were reduced to ten men after 42 minutes when Dave Kitson was dismissed from play for a challenge on Korey Smith.

Barnsley continued to push for the opener in the early stages of the second period, but the Pompey defence stood strong. Gray had another headed effort just past the hour mark, but it drifted just wide..

The away side had a golden chance to take the lead after 68 minutes when Joel Ward found himself unmarked in the area, but his shot was gathered comfortably by Luke Steele.

Barnsley did make the breakthrough, however, after 76 minutes when Smith found John O'Brien and the midfielder found a fine finish into the bottom corner.

The home side tied up the win late on when Matty Done produced a cool finish inside the area.

Barnsley will look to continue their winning run when they host Birmingham on Tuesday, while Portsmouth host Leeds on Saturday.
