Ipswich Town lose but hold on to playoff spot

Blackburn Rovers come back from being a goal down to beat Ipswich Town 3-2.

Blackburn Rovers beat Ipswich Town 3-2 at Ewood Park, but Mick McCarthy's side have held on to their playoff place thanks to results elsewhere.

The visitors took an early lead when Daryl Murphy volleyed home Jay Tabb's second-minute corner for his 26th goal of the season.

Jordan Rhodes then spurned a series of good chances to draw his side level, most notably when he failed to connect with a Craig Conway delivery that just needed a touch.

The Blackburn striker also fired straight at Bartosz Bialkowski when well placed, before he stroked home from inside the box to level the game on 36 minutes.

Gary Bowyer's side then went ahead when Conway finished calmly at the back post after collecting Rudy Gestede's flick-on.

Half-time substitute Stephen Hunt then blazed over the bar from a Freddie Sears pass, before Gestede increased the lead after a mishit clearance fell to him in the Ipswich box.

Ipswich were still threatening, however, and could have had a goal back when Murphy nodded a Tyrone Mings cross just inches over the bar.

Sears was then guilty of spurning a golden opportunity when he somehow managed to volley over from just two yards out with the goal at his mercy.

However, the away side did pull one back from the penalty spot through Murphy after Teddy Bishop was tripped by Tommy Spurr.

The result means that Ipswich finish sixth, while Blackburn end the season in ninth.
