Stuttering Borussia Monchengladbach fall to Mainz 05 defeat

Mainz 05 pick up their first win of the Bundesliga season at the expense of Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia-Park.

Borussia Monchengladbach have suffered a second-successive defeat of the Bundesliga season by falling 2-1 at home to Mainz 05.

The Foals, who kicked off their campaign with a heavy 4-0 reverse at Borussia Dortmund last weekend, now find themselves bottom of the early league standings.

Ibrahima Traore managed to fire away the first shot of the game 10 minutes in, but the effort did not have enough on it to get the better of Loris Karius.

There was a real scare for the hosts when Yunus Malli struck the post, while moments later Thorgan Hazard saw a goal ruled out for offside in a lively opening to the contest.

It was Mainz who took the lead, though, when Jairo Samperio converted from a corner, moments after Fabian Frei's shot had been kept out by the bar.

Hazard struggled to make the most of his chance when played through at the end of the first half, which appeared to matter little when Patrick Herrmann produced a fine shot into the bottom corner to level up the scores.

Again Hazard failed to capitalise on a good opening to put Lucien Favre's side ahead for the first time, with Raffael also squandering a chance of his own.

Despite Gladbach's chances, it was Die Nullfunfer who claimed a first win of the season when Christian Clemens volleyed home on the rebound to leave the hosts down and out.
