Ingolstadt victorious on Bundesliga debut

Lukas Hinterseer scores the only goal of the game as FC Ingolstadt beat Mainz 05 1-0 on their Bundesliga debut.

Lukas Hinterseer scored the winner as FC Ingolstadt 04 claimed a 1-0 victory over Mainz 05 on their Bundesliga debut.

The Bavarian club, formed just 11 years ago, were confident in possession in the early stages, but Mainz rarely looked threatened by the home side's attack in the first half.

In a cagey start to the new campaign for both sides, opportunities were few and far between until Ramazan Ozcan produced what would prove to be an important save to keep out Jairo Samperio's strike.

Despite looking comfortable before the break, it was a worrying start to the second half for Ingolstadt when Mainz midfielder Christian Clemens saw his effort correctly ruled out for offside, before Florian Niederlechner miscued a shot straight to Ozcan from close range.

However, concern soon turned to delight for the visiting supporters as Hinterseer scored the club's first goal in the top tier of German football by cutting into space in the box before picking out the top corner with an emphatic finish.

Predictably, Mainz piled the pressure on as the hosts went in search of a point, but a stubborn defensive display from Ingolstadt in the closing stages ensured it was the perfect start for the Bundesliga newcomers.
