Africa Cup of Nations preview: Burkina Faso

Sports Mole assesses Burkina Faso's chances at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

Burkina Faso will be keen not to just make up the numbers at this year's Africa Cup of Nations following their disappointing record in recent times.

The Faso have failed to get past the group stages since 2000 and three of those tournaments have seen them unsuccessful in qualifying.

Despite their dismal showings in the past, they beat Algeria and Tunisia on their way to finishing in fourth place in 1998.

Belgian Paul Put leads the country into a major competition for the first time following his appointment in March 2012.

Group: C

Players to watch out for:

Moumouni Dagano

No other player has scored as many goals for Burkina Faso than Dagano. The veteran striker has netted 31 times for his country and he also has a stellar record at club level across Europe from his time with Genk, Guingamp and Sochaux.

Bakary Kone

A real dynamo of a defender, Kone has struggled to earn himself a regular place in the Lyon starting lineup this season. Not that confidence is a problem for the 24-year-old. Instead, he is the sort of player that could use the tournament to his benefit in terms of catching they eyes of other clubs.

Previous best: Fourth place 1998

Odds to win outright: 50/1
