Thibaut Courtois: 'Silverware would salvage Chelsea season'

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois believes that his side can still salvage something from their season should they win either the Champions League or FA Cup.

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has said that his side can still salvage their season should they win a major trophy.

The Premier League champions are all but out of the title race already following a dreadful first half of the campaign, with 19 points currently separating them from league leaders Arsenal.

However, the Blues have improved under interim boss Guus Hiddink and remain in both the Champions League and the FA Cup, where they face Scunthorpe United on Saturday.

Courtois believes that victory in either of those tournaments, in addition to continued improvement in the league, would turn their campaign into a successful one.

"Obviously if you win the FA Cup or the Champions League maybe it will still be a positive [season]," Courtois is quoted as saying by PA.

"Success is a big word if you play until now not very well except the last three or four games. But still with the FA Cup or maybe the Champions League it could be a positive season if we end up in the top four or top six.

"We have to go step by step. Some teams are close together. If we beat West Brom and Everton we could be maybe eighth or ninth in a few weeks. Everything can change very fast, we just need the results."

Chelsea were drawn against Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League, with the first leg to be played at the Parc des Princes on February 16.
