Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel quits Trabzonspor by mutual consent over fears relating to the coronavirus pandemic.

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has quit Turkish side Trabzonspor amid coronavirus concerns.

The 32-year-old joined the Turkish outfit last summer after being released from Middlesbrough and has made 23 appearances for Huseyin Cimsir's side across all competitions.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it unprecedented implications to sporting leagues across the world, and the midfielder has parted ways with Trabzonspor by mutual consent.

Matches in the Turkish Super Lig are still being contested, albeit behind closed doors, and Mikel has hit out at the decision not to suspend the league.

A statement from the midfielder read: "There is more to life than football. I do not feel comfortable and don't want to play football in this situation.

"Everyone should be home with their families and loved ones at this critical time. Season should be cancelled as the world is facing such turbulent times."

The former Nigeria international made 372 appearances for Chelsea between 2006 and 2017.
