Chelsea confirm that club captain John Terry suffered two cracked ribs during the first leg of the Blues' quarter-final triumph over Benfica last week.

Chelsea have confirmed that John Terry has sustained two cracked ribs following a scan on the club captain today.

While it was believed that the rib injury was sustained during the Blues' 2-1 victory over Benfica in the Champions League quarter-final last night, the club have confirmed that the 31-year-old suffered the blow in the first-leg win over the Portuguese side last week.

A statement on the club's website said: "Scans confirm that John has two cracked ribs sustained in last week's game in Portugal. We have been able to manage it and will continue to do so. We will continue to monitor it on a daily basis and will assess him for upcoming games."

There are no indications as to how long the centre-back will be sidelined for, but Terry is expected to be ruled out of the Blues' Premier League fixture against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
