Graeme Souness: 'Jose Mourinho shows Chelsea he needs new players'

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has told the club that he needs to sign new players by substituting John Terry, says Graeme Souness.

Former Liverpool manager Graeme Souness has claimed that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has sent out a message to the club's hierarchy by bringing off captain John Terry.

The 35-year-old was replaced by Kurt Zouma at half time of their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, and Souness believes that Mourinho's substitutions show that the Blues need to buy some players before the end of the window.

He told Sky Sports News: "I thought John Terry was as good as Gary Cahill next to him and I didn't see him get exposed. John Terry is a leader. I think it's the manager trying to make a statement to the owner in as much that he needs more players.

"The manager, if the stories are correct, would like more players. I think he was emphasising that point today to the owner by the actions of taking Terry off and introducing Juan Cuadrado later."
