Tony Adams: 'No leaders, personalities, true captain in England squad'

Former England and Arsenal defender Tony Adams says that the current England squad 'lacks winners and leaders'.

Former Arsenal captain Tony Adams has criticised the current England squad by saying that there are no standout "leaders" or "personalities" available to Roy Hodgson.

Wayne Rooney was named as the new England captain on Wednesday following Steven Gerrard's international retirement, but Adams is disappointed that the Manchester United forward was the only option available to his manager.

As well as launching an attack on the lack of leadership in the setup, Adams has also said that there "aren't enough winners" in the squad.

"I look through the England squad and don't see any leaders, personalities or a true captain," Adams told BT Sport.

"Rooney is the only candidate. He's experienced and played tournaments but he's not delivered, so can hardly be called a winner at international level. There isn't anyone else that's ready for it. There aren't enough winners in that team either.

"It speaks volumes there aren't three or four choices to be skipper. When I was playing, you had myself, Alan Shearer, Stuart Pearce, Paul Ince and Gary Neville."

Adams amassed 66 England appearances over an international career that spanned 13 years.
