Wayne Rooney named England captain

Wayne Rooney is handed the England captaincy by manager Roy Hodgson ahead of the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

Roy Hodgson has named Wayne Rooney as his new England captain.

The Manchester United striker takes the armband from Steven Gerrard, who retired from international football earlier this summer.

Speaking of his decision to hand Rooney the honour, Hodgson told reporters at Wembley: "I gave it a lot of thought but Wayne is an obvious choice.

"I'm pleased to say I've been able to offer it to him. I've had a long conversation with him and he's prepared to accept the pressures that the England captaincy brings. It's important that the players wants to take on that enormous responsibility."

Rooney has scored 40 goals for the Three Lions in 95 appearances, and was also recently named as captain of United.

Earlier today, Hodgson named his squad to take on Norway and Switzerland next month, with four players receiving their senior call-ups.
