Jamie Carragher: 'Alan Shearer not right man for England'

Jamie Carragher claims that Alan Shearer does not have what it takes to become the next manager of England, citing his ill-fated spell in charge of Newcastle as proof.

Former England defender Jamie Carragher has insisted that Alan Shearer does not have all the attributes required to take over as the next national team manager.

The Premier League's record goalscorer threw his hat into the ring for the post after Roy Hodgson ended his four-year stint in the immediate aftermath of England's humiliating Euro 2016 exit at the hands of Iceland.

Carragher has no doubt that Shearer would bring passion to the role, but pointed to the former striker's ill-fated spell in charge of Newcastle United as evidence that he is not ready to take on the job.

"Shearer's patriotism is admirable but there is more to being a successful manager than just patriotism and emotion," Carragher told the Daily Mail.

"Shearer, after all, will remember how, after acting on emotion when Newcastle called him in 2009, he failed to stop the club he has supported all his life being relegated."

Meanwhile, Gareth Southgate, who emerged as the early favourite to succeed Hodgson, has reportedly rejected the chance to take over on an interim basis.
